RHODES - Part 1 LINDOS

We're home from our little Greek adventure to Rhodes.
We spent 3 nights in Lindos and 4 nights in Rhodes Town. As usual we did loads, so I've split our trip over two posts. First up, our time in Lindos.

DAY ONE

Welcome to Lindos.

And what a view.
This is the view that met us from our apartment.

Lindos main beach.
This, in the height of summer will be full of sunbeds and umbrellas but because the season is only just getting started, it was still empty and very quiet.

This is the other beach in the resort, St Paul's Bay. Again, it was very natural, beautiful crystal clear water. Lots of preparation was going on to get it ready for the season but you could still find a spot to sit and chill, rather than rows of sunbeds. I'm not sure where you'd really be able to go in the full height of summer, as it would all pretty much be sunbeds, no hidden coves to escape to.

We just spent the afternoon getting our bearings, found a rooftop restaurant to eat tea at. The Acropolis in the background. It was chilly in the evenings, as soon as the sun disappeared, you definitely needed an extra layer.

This is the view from our apartment looking right, rather than out to the bay.
The classic white cube shaped Lindos houses and the Acropolis up on the hill.

We booked our accommodation through booking.com. It was perfect for our stay. Close enough to the sea for Jeff to take his morning swim and great views over the bay and up to the Acropolis. We could open the doors for a full view from the apartment but we also had our own outside space just around the corner.

We really only sleep and shower at our accommodation. We need a fridge and in the height of summer, air-conditioning. So it was perfect. I'm guessing we were one on the first to use it this year. There was a hint of the bedding feeling a little damp and heavy and the shutters were swollen and hard to open but other than that, it was fine. It just needed airing and a bit of warmth!!

DAY TWO

We headed into the town for breakfast.
Got to see the poor old donkeys that carry people from the town up to the Acropolis, poor things.

We walked!!!

What fantastic views, out across to the main beach.
We definitely choose the easier route to the top, far less steep than the way down.

The Acropolis was incredible. Again, being out of the main season, it was an enjoyable walk up to the top, out of the hot, hot sun. There was also far fewer people around than there would be in the summer. I can imagine it being super busy in the summer. As you can see, we had loads of space to walk around and enjoy the views from the top.

That's St Paul's Bay in the background, where we spent the afternoon.

Poor old donkeys.
Think this photo probably sums up how they felt!!

We walked back down the other side, with views across the town.

Stopped off for a gyros for lunch!

We spent our afternoon at St Paul's bay. Jeff swam. He said the water was an amazing colour but definitely on the chilly side. Far too cold for me but I did paddle and enjoyed a spot of people watching!

We stopped off at this fab cafe for a coffee on our way back.
Very Greek!!!

Yamas!
Another rooftop restaurant for our tea.

The Acropolis at night!

DAY THREE

Greek yogurt for breakfast, finally!!

Back at that lovely Greek Cafe.

Gorgeous art work.

On our way through the town, we spotted this lady walking through the town, carrying these colourful Easter eggs. It was the Greek Orthodox Easter whilst we were there. So we wanted to understand the celebrations.

The colourful eggs.
The egg represents the body of Christ and painted red to represent the blood of Christ.
They apparently tap them together....

"To play, each player holds a red egg, and one taps the end of her or his egg lightly against the end of the other player's egg. When one egg's end is cracked, the person with the unbroken egg uses the same end of the egg to try to crack the other end of the opponent's egg."

As Jeff put it, playing conkers but with eggs!!

Today we decided to go for a walk around the headland to the far side of the main beach.

All the way out to Kleoboulos' Tomb!

Fabulous views looking back across the bay to the town and the Acropolis.

Was perfect weather, not too hot, slight breeze.
It was good under foot too, and you simply followed the red dots!!

We stopped at the old windmill en route. You could climb up inside but obviously not in good repair. I'm hoping we'll see more in Rhodes Town. Another advantage of coming this time of year, is seeing how green everywhere is and so many pretty yellow daisies around.

We took our time, I was mindful of my back and ongoing treatment.
The last thing I wanted to do was scupper all the positive work I'd done before our holiday.

We climbed to the top of the tomb, extremely windy!!
But the views were incredible.

Could zoom in and get a really good view of the Acropolis.

Very picturesque.

We walked back to town to get some lunch.....

...another gyros, as they are so delicious.

And we took it back to our little outdoor space.
Who knew gyros would be such a crowd pleaser!!! Cats literally appeared from everywhere!
If you don't like cats, don't come to Lindos!!

The weather was changeable. I think we'd hoped it would be a little more consistent. But there was quite a bit of cloud and the breeze could be chilly. Still, no rain and it was still warmer than the UK. We decided we would explore the little beach around the far side of the main bay in the afternoon.

We found a sea cave, with the most turquoise water imaginable.

Jeff couldn't resist jumping in!!

We ate inside for our last night in Lindos. And we chose well.....

.....the food, as always, has been delicious so far!!

DAY FOUR

Our last morning in Lindos and sadly a cloud full of clouds.
We enjoyed breakfast in the lovely cafe, with views out across the bay......

.....then walked back to our apartment, finished packing and then sat out in our outside space and read for a bit until it was time to get the bus to Rhodes Town.

We walked up the hill to the main square, then cheated and got a taxi up to the bus stop, as it was quite a trek up a very steep hill with our cases and the taxi was only 5 euros! It would have cost 60 euros to get a taxi all the way to Rhodes town.....

.....the bus was only 11 euros.

We always try and use public transport. It may take a little longer stopping off along the way but you go to places you wouldn't see in a taxi, which would take the direct route and at the end of the day, it's more affordable.

The last views of Lindos from the bus.
Farewell, I'm sure we'll return one day. Most probably once retired, in September.
Would definitely try and avoid it in the height of summer, would get far too busy!

I always share photo's of our trip over on my travel Instagram account @hap_pea_travels pop over there if you'd like to see a lot more photo's.

Next up Rhodes Town.......
