BERGAMO

DAY THREE

Time flies when you're having fun!!
Early birds again and on another train, this time to Bergamo......

The best cabin suitcases!

Last view of the impressive Milano Centrale Statione

We have averaged 20,000 plus steps every day!

What a way to start the day, elevenses!! half crème, half pistachio creme.
Needed it, a full day of walking ahead.

"Bergamo is an Italian city northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets, encircled by Venetian walls and accessible by funicular. It's home to the Duomo di Bergamo, the city cathedral" ...... it's also closer to the airport!

It is a beautiful city and is named as the Italian City of Culture for 2023.
I was lucky to visit the 2022 Capital of Culture, when we went to Procida in April.

So after dropping off our bags, we headed up through Citta Bassa,
the modern part of the city, to the funicular.....

.......taking us up to the Citta Alta, the old part of Bergamo.

It was really busy in the old part. We were hitting it at midday, on a Saturday,
so we worked our way through the busy streets to.....

.....get another funicular, up to San Vigilio Castle.

Arrow marks the highest point!

Where we were treated to the most incredible views across the city and beyond.

We then walked our way down the cobbled streets......

.......soaking in more views along the way.

We had a late lunch in a Piazza, sat in the shade and it did feel chilly.

It's been lovely in the sunshine but definitely needed a coat in the shade.

Shared a delicious focaccia for a late lunch and enjoyed a much needed coffee.

Stumbled across a beautiful courtyard, Cloister of the Monastero del Carmine, used as a theatre space, whilst wandering. That's what I love about traveling, you just happen upon places, spaces, views unexpectedly

Next stop the Torre Civica (bell tower)

We got the lift up thankfully, as it was 230 steps walk back down!!

Beautiful views of the Piazza Vechio below.....

...... the Duamo and the Basilica and.....

......the castle on the highest point.

The Basilica

Piazza Vechio

Lucked out with the weather!!

Last up, the Porta San Giacomo City Gate....

.......which was built in 1593 and is the entrance to the Citta Alta.....

......and the Venetian Walls and more fantastic views.

We should have stayed up there for another hour to see the sun set but we also needed to head back down to Citta Bassa whilst it was still light and go to our accommodation.

We both agreed, you could easily spend another day here, exploring the Citta Bassa
and walk the 6km city walls, a really beautiful city

Good excuse to return one day.

So Sunday morning we were up early again and got the bus back to Bergamo Airport.

LOVE this sign - KISS & FLY drop off area at the airport.

We had the best time and ate the best food! Diet starts now, before Christmas!

I loved exploring and always remain flexible. We had no intention of going to Verona but we're so glad we did. We'd have missed out on a really good day, had we stuck to our original plans.
I've been really lucky to have visited Italy three times this year, due to Covid delaying plans. Naples with Jeff at Easter, Pisa, Florence and the Cinque Terre with my sister in June and now Milan, Verona and Bergamo with Sophie. Sadly Italy isn't in our travel plans for next year (yet!!) but possibly Easter 2023!! I would return in a heartbeat if money were no object! xx
