DAY TWO
Another day, another train. This time to ......
.......Verona.
We dad originally planned to explore Milan for two days but we pretty much did everything we wanted to in one day, so we had a quick search for anywhere near by and decided to get the train to Verona.
I could think of worse places to spend my birthday!!
So in just under two hours on the train, we arrived in Verona.
From the train station it's about a 20 minute walk to the city gate and Piazza Bra,
home to the Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre.
We sat in the Piazza and enjoyed the first of many treats. What a view!
Next up Juliet's balcony, famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It's in a tiny courtyard which gets really busy. From the street you wouldn't really know it was there
It is apparently good luck to touch Juliet's chest, it brings you love and happiness.
It's also a place where messages of love are left.
Next up Piazza delle Erbe, the oldest square in Verona and home to
the Torre dei Lamberti Bell Tower which is 84 m high.
Fantastic views from the top, we got the lift up and then climbed back down the stairs.
Had lunch in the Piazza, enjoying the warm sunshine and.....
....... birthday favourite, spaghetti carbonara xx
We walked some more after lunch, past the Basilica and ended up at the Adige River and
the Ponte Pietra, Italian for "Stone Bridge"
We enjoyed our first gelato, sat looking over to the castle, which we were about to explore.
We took the funicular up to the castle as Sophie didn't fancy the climb and well, it was her birthday!!! Worth it for the fabulous views though and it was only €2:50 each
Verona Duamo
We ambled through the streets of Verona until .......
.....we were back where we started, in Piazza Bra.
Sat and enjoyed an Aperol Spritz and a beer watching the sun go down....
......and the moon come up.
A fab day and birthday in Verona.
