Quality time

This morning I spent some quality time with Sophie, just the girls, at a sewing workshop. Sophie got a sewing machine for Christmas and I'm ashamed to say until now, I haven't found the time or had the know how, to get her started. Not being a sewer myself, I have let it sit, looking pretty on her nice table for the past 3 months.

So today we were booked in on a 'Starter Session' - 2 hours of 'Get to know your machine'. It was just what we needed - we took her machine with us so we could learn how to thread it, load the bobbin etc and that was all she needed - she LOVES it. In the last 20 minutes she was taught how to make a bunting flag, so we bought some fabric and now there is no stopping her.

She quickly drew out and cut up her fabric triangles.....

and started sewing!

2 hours and 12 bunting flags later we are ready to go and choose the binding.

I really do hope that she has found that little 'something' that she enjoys. Her Grandmother was a very talented, creative seamstress and she would have loved to have taught her herself. Sadly she passed away 4 years ago now, but I like to think that she's been smiling down on her today at her small 'dip' into the world of sewing and feeling proud at her first session. After an excited telephone conversation with her other Granny and a teatime visit from her Grandpa this evening, she has already taken 2 orders for bunting! I'll have to get her on the payroll making a spotty selection for dots and spots.

You never know, she may even teach me!

What a lovely post - it's so lovely to see the beginnings of what could be a lifetime of sewing.

Thats great. My daughter loves using my machine but by the time I have lugged downstairs and set her up it doesn't happen often enough !
Long may it continue

Fantastic, my Nan was very crafty too but died when I was 5 & my mum is hopeless with crafts so I had no one to teach me. I've always dabbled but it my late 20s after attending workshops I'm sewing & crochet well at last, glad Sophie has the sewing bug too!

Fantastic, go Sophie! Just think of all the projects she can start. Lucy has the same sewing machine in Red, which was also Christmas present. This lovely post has reminded me to give Lucy another lesson, if only you were nearer I could teach the two girls together :)

I too got my first ever sewing machine for christmas. My mum taught me how to thread the machine etc, so far I've made an elephant cushion for my niece.

If your daughter needs some inspiration, although the following blog truly depresses me, have a look at Amy, she is just soooooo talented. www.nanacompany.typepad.com

Happy sewing. By the way, if I lived in your home, I would never want to leave it, it's wonderful

Thank you for all your lovely comments - Sophie was really chuffed - a smile from ear to ear. I'm hoping she will enjoy it - I'd love for her to find a creative pastime she really wants to spend time doing.
